How to use the uppercase converter

1. Add your text. Type or paste it into Your text, press Open file to load a plain-text file (.txt, .csv, .md and similar), or drop a file on the box. Example loads a sample.
2. Read the result. The Result box updates as you type. There are no options to set: every letter is capitalized and nothing else changes.
3. Take the text with you. Press Copy for the clipboard or Download .txt for a file named uppercase-result.txt.
4. Keep working on it. Use as input moves the result into the top box (with Undo to go back), and the links under the tool open the same text in the lowercase, sentence case or title case converter.

The line under the input box counts the words, characters and lines of your original text, which helps when an all-caps field has a length limit.

What changes and what stays the same

The converter changes letters only. Every lowercase letter is replaced by its capital, letters that are already capitals stay, and everything else is copied through untouched:

Because nothing is skipped, words with their own capitalization lose it: iPhone becomes IPHONE and eBay becomes EBAY. Acronyms such as NASA are already capitals, so they look the same.

Accents, ß and other languages

The tool uses the case rules built into your browser, which follow the Unicode standard. They cover far more than A to Z:

Two of these change the length of the text: ß and each ligature become two characters. If you are filling a field with a strict character limit, check the count with the character counter after converting.

Turkish and Azerbaijani: these languages pair a dotted i with a dotted capital İ. The tool always applies the general rules, whatever language your browser is set to, so Çağrı ve şiir becomes ÇAĞRI VE ŞIIR, not ŞİİR, and istanbul becomes ISTANBUL. In Turkish text, change each capital I that should be dotted to İ by hand.

When people need all caps

• Headings, labels and signs. Short headings, button labels, poster text, warning notices and form labels are often set in capitals.
• Forms that ask for capitals. Some paper and online forms, shipping labels and official records ask for names and addresses in block letters. Convert once, then copy each line.
• Codes and identifiers. Product codes, booking references and IDs are often stored in capitals: Part no. ab-1234x becomes PART NO. AB-1234X. For constant names such as MAX_RETRY_COUNT from a phrase, the snake case converter adds the underscores.
• Spreadsheet columns. Paste a column copied from Excel or Google Sheets, convert it, and paste it back, without writing a formula.
• SQL keywords. Writing SELECT, FROM and WHERE in capitals is a common style. Converting a whole query also capitalizes string values such as 'smith', which can change what the query matches, so convert only the keywords.

Where all caps can cause problems

In email and chat, a whole message in capitals can come across as shouting, so keep them for short text. A few kinds of text should not be converted at all:

• Web addresses. RFC 3986 treats the scheme and host of a URL as case-insensitive, but the path and query are case-sensitive unless the site says otherwise. https://example.com/Path?q=abc becomes HTTPS://EXAMPLE.COM/PATH?Q=ABC, which may point to a different page or fail. • Passwords, codes and tokens that are case-sensitive.
• Text you will need in normal case later. Capitals remove information, and no tool can tell which letters were capitals before. Keep a copy of the original.

Uppercase in Word, Google Docs and spreadsheets

If the text is already in a document, these built-in commands do the same job:

The spreadsheet functions return a new value, so copy the helper column and paste it as values to replace the original text. This converter is quicker when the text comes from several places or has to go into a program without a case command.
