How Many Words Is a 5-Page Essay? Double, 1.5 and Single-Spaced

A 5-page essay is about 1,250 words double-spaced and about 2,500 words single-spaced, in 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. With 1.5 line spacing it is about 1,675 words.

Published

The usual answer is 1,250 words. That assumes the setup most essay assignments ask for: 12 pt Times New Roman, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on US Letter or A4 paper. That page holds about 250 words, and 5 × 250 = 1,250. Change the spacing, font or size and the figure changes a lot. Single spacing doubles it to about 2,500 words, and a wide font like Arial cuts it to about 1,100. The tables below give the figures for each common setup. To check your own settings, enter 5 in the words to pages converter with Pages → words selected.

5 pages in words, by spacing

All figures are for 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins and come from the words-per-page values the converter uses.

Line spacing Words per page Words in 5 pages
Double 250 1,250
1.5 lines 335 1,675
Single 500 2,500

Double spacing is the default for school and college essays. MLA asks for double-spaced text throughout, and so does APA. If an assignment just says “5 pages” and names no format, double spacing is the safe assumption. Even so, check the instructions or ask, because the gap between double and single spacing is a full 1,250 words.

5 pages in words, by font and size

Fonts have different letter widths, so the same page holds a different number of words. These are double-spaced figures from the converter:

Font and size Words per page Words in 5 pages
Times New Roman 12 pt 250 1,250
Times New Roman 11 pt 300 1,500
Calibri 12 pt 245 1,225
Calibri 11 pt 290 1,450
Arial 12 pt 220 1,100
Arial 11 pt 265 1,325
Georgia 12 pt 225 1,125
Georgia 11 pt 265 1,325
Courier New 12 pt 175 875

Two things stand out. First, size matters more than font: going from 12 pt to 11 pt Times New Roman adds 250 words to 5 pages. Second, Courier New is a monospaced font, so every letter takes the same width, even an i. A Courier page holds far fewer words, so 5 pages takes only about 875.

MLA and APA: what the style guides set

Both MLA and APA set most of the variables that decide words per page, according to the Purdue OWL summaries of each style:

Setting MLA APA 7
Paper 8.5 × 11 in 8.5 × 11 in
Margins 1 in on all sides 1 in on all sides
Font A legible font, e.g. Times New Roman, 12 pt Options include 12 pt Times New Roman, 11 pt Calibri, 11 pt Arial, 11 pt Georgia
Spacing Double Double
Title page None unless requested Yes, for student papers

For an MLA essay in 12 pt Times New Roman, 5 pages is about 1,250 words. The first page loses a few lines to the heading (your name, the instructor’s name, the course and the date) and the centered title. Those five double-spaced lines take roughly 50 words of space, so 5 full pages of text holds closer to 1,200 words.

For an APA essay the answer depends on the font you choose: about 1,250 words in 12 pt Times New Roman, 1,450 in 11 pt Calibri and 1,325 in 11 pt Arial or Georgia. The title page is a separate page with no essay text on it, so ask whether it counts toward the 5.

What changes the real page count

The converter’s figures assume full paragraphs of running text. Real essays differ in a few ways, and almost all of them add pages:

  • Headings and section breaks leave part of a line or more empty.
  • Short paragraphs end in partly filled lines. Ten short paragraphs fill more space than five long ones with the same words.
  • Block quotations are indented, so each line holds fewer words.
  • Lists, tables and images take space with few or no words.
  • The Works Cited or References list starts on a new page in MLA and is double-spaced like the rest of the paper. If the essay ends a few lines into page 5, the sources go on page 6.
  • Word processor differences. Default spacing before and after paragraphs, or a slightly different line height for the same font, can move text by several lines over 5 pages.

So treat 1,250 words as a planning figure, not an exact one. Some teachers state the expected length in words to avoid this, and a word count is more reliable than pages. When you have both, the word count usually wins.

Other essay lengths at a glance

Double-spaced figures use 250 words per page and single-spaced figures use 500, both in 12 pt Times New Roman:

Pages Double-spaced Single-spaced
1 250 500
2 500 1,000
3 750 1,500
4 1,000 2,000
5 1,250 2,500
6 1,500 3,000
8 2,000 4,000
10 2,500 5,000
15 3,750 7,500
20 5,000 10,000

How to hit 5 pages without padding

  1. Plan in words. Divide about 1,250 words across your sections before you write. For example, a 150-word introduction, three or four body sections of 250 to 300 words, and a 150-word conclusion.
  2. Count as you go. Paste the draft into the word counter and set a word goal of 1,250. The progress bar shows how many words are left, and over the goal it turns red and shows how many words to cut.
  3. Check the page count in your own setup. If the essay must fill 5 pages in a particular font, enter your word count in the words to pages converter with Words → pages, the matching Font, Size and Spacing, and compare.
  4. If you are short, add substance. Another example, a counterargument or more analysis of a quotation adds pages that a grader will read. Wider margins, a larger font or extra spacing are easy to spot and break the formatting rules.
  5. If you are long, cut words. Long sentences hide filler. The sentence counter shows sentence lengths, and the word counter’s Top words list shows overused words such as really. Common words such as very are hidden there by default; untick Hide common words in “Top words” to see them.

The word counter treats any run of characters that contains a letter or digit as one word, so well-known, don’t and 3.5 each count once and a lone dash does not count. If your word processor shows a slightly different total, the difference usually comes from how it treats dashes, numbers and symbols.

Questions

How many paragraphs is a 5-page essay?

Usually about 10 to 13 paragraphs double-spaced, if each paragraph runs 100 to 125 words. That is an estimate: paragraph length varies a lot by subject and writer. The guide how many words in a paragraph covers typical lengths.

Is 1,000 words enough for a 5-page essay?

No. In 12 pt Times New Roman double-spaced, 1,000 words fills about 4 pages. You need about 250 more words, or roughly one more page of full paragraphs.

Does the Works Cited or References page count toward 5 pages?

It depends on the assignment. MLA starts the Works Cited list on a separate page at the end, so a 5-page essay with sources often runs to 6 printed pages. If the instructions do not say, ask whether the page count means pages of text.

How many words is a 5-page essay in Arial?

About 1,100 words in 12 pt Arial double-spaced, because Arial letters are wider than Times New Roman letters. In 11 pt Arial double-spaced, one of the APA font options, it is about 1,325 words.

How long does it take to write a 5-page essay?

There is no reliable single figure: it depends on research, drafting and editing time. Plan around the word count (about 1,250 words double-spaced) and leave time for a full reread before you submit.
