How to use the converter
- Under Convert, choose Words → pages to turn a word count into pages, or Pages → words to find how many words a page requirement means.
- Type the number in Words or pages. If you have a draft, get its word count from the word counter first.
- Pick the Font your assignment or template uses: Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, Georgia or Courier New.
- Pick the Size (10, 11, 12 or 14 pt) and the Spacing (Single, 1.5 lines or Double).
- Read the result. About shows the pages (to one decimal place) or the words (to the nearest whole word), and Words per page shows the figure used for the calculation.
The starting setup, 1,000 words in 12 pt Times New Roman double-spaced, shows about 4 pages.
How the estimate is calculated
The converter does not lay out a real page. It uses a words-per-page figure and divides (words → pages) or multiplies (pages → words). The figure is built in three steps:
- Base: 500 words per page for 12 pt Times New Roman, single-spaced, on US Letter or A4 with 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins. That is the common rule of thumb for a page of text that includes paragraph breaks.
- Font: other fonts have wider letters, so fewer words fit on a line. The base is divided by a width factor: Times New Roman 1, Calibri 1.03, Georgia 1.12, Arial 1.13 and Courier New 1.42.
- Size and spacing: the result is multiplied by (12 ÷ size)², because a smaller font fits both more characters per line and more lines per page, then divided by the spacing (1, 1.5 or 2).
The words-per-page figure is rounded to the nearest 5 before it is used. Because the page result is shown to one decimal place, a very small count such as 1 word shows as 0 pages.
Words per page for every setting
These are the exact figures the converter uses. Divide your word count by the number in the matching cell to get pages.
| Font and size | Single | 1.5 lines | Double |
|---|---|---|---|
| Times New Roman 10 pt | 720 | 480 | 360 |
| Times New Roman 11 pt | 595 | 395 | 300 |
| Times New Roman 12 pt | 500 | 335 | 250 |
| Times New Roman 14 pt | 365 | 245 | 185 |
| Calibri 11 pt | 580 | 385 | 290 |
| Calibri 12 pt | 485 | 325 | 245 |
| Arial 11 pt | 525 | 350 | 265 |
| Arial 12 pt | 440 | 295 | 220 |
| Georgia 11 pt | 530 | 355 | 265 |
| Georgia 12 pt | 445 | 300 | 225 |
| Courier New 12 pt | 350 | 235 | 175 |
Two things stand out. Switching from Times New Roman to Arial at the same size costs about 12% of the words on each page, and going from 12 pt to 11 pt adds about a fifth. If a page minimum feels hard to reach, check that you are using the font the instructions ask for: a page count set for Times New Roman is a smaller target in Arial.

MLA and APA settings
School and college papers are the most common reason to convert words to pages, and the two main style guides set most of the variables for you:
- MLA: double-spaced text in a legible font such as Times New Roman at 12 pt, with 1-inch margins on 8.5 × 11-inch paper. Choose Times New Roman, 12 pt, Double: about 250 words per page.
- APA 7: double-spaced on 8.5 × 11-inch paper with 1-inch margins. APA does not require one font but recommends several, including 11 pt Calibri, 11 pt Arial, 12 pt Times New Roman and 11 pt Georgia. Those give about 290, 265, 250 and 265 words per page in the converter.
Instructors set their own rules on whether the title page or the reference list counts toward a page minimum, so check the assignment. When the assignment gives both a word count and a page count, the word count is the more precise target.
When the estimate is off
The figures describe full pages of plain paragraphs. Real documents differ in predictable ways:
- Headings, lists and tables leave partly empty lines and extra space, so a report with many sections fills more pages than its word count suggests.
- Dialogue and short paragraphs end lines early. Fiction with a lot of dialogue runs longer than an essay of the same length.
- First pages in MLA carry a heading block and a title; APA papers have a separate title page.
- Long words (technical, legal or medical vocabulary) take more space per word than everyday prose.
- Other margins or paper sizes, such as 1.25-inch margins or a book trim size, are not modeled. The converter assumes US Letter or A4 with 1-inch margins and makes no distinction between the two.
For a precise count, set up the document in your word processor with the required font and spacing and look at the page count there. Use the converter to plan before you write, or to check whether a draft is roughly on target. To estimate how long the same text takes to present, use the words to minutes converter or the reading time calculator, and for longer comparisons see the guide how many pages is 1,000 words.
Questions
How many pages is 1,000 words?
In 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, about 2 pages single-spaced, 3 pages with 1.5 spacing and 4 pages double-spaced. In 12 pt Arial double-spaced it is about 4.5 pages, because Arial letters are wider.
How many words is a 5-page essay?
About 1,250 words double-spaced in 12 pt Times New Roman, which is the usual MLA setup, and about 2,500 words single-spaced. In 11 pt Calibri double-spaced, one of the APA font options, it is about 1,450 words. The guide how many words is a 5-page essay covers other lengths.
How many pages is 1,000 words in MLA format?
About 4 pages. MLA papers use a legible 12 pt font such as Times New Roman, double spacing and 1-inch margins, which the converter estimates at about 250 words per page. The heading block and title on the first page take a few lines, so the text may run slightly onto a fifth page.
Does the converter count the words in my document?
No. You type a number. To get the number, paste your text into the word counter, then enter the result here.
Why does my document have more pages than the estimate?
The estimate assumes full paragraphs of running text. Headings, lists, block quotes, short dialogue lines, images, a title page and a reference list all leave blank space, so real documents usually run longer.
Can I use it for a book or novel?
Only for manuscript pages on US Letter or A4 paper. Printed book pages are smaller and typeset differently, so a published book has a different page count from its manuscript. The guide how many words is a novel gives typical lengths in words, which publishers use instead of pages.
How does the converter handle 1.5 spacing?
It treats 1.5 spacing as lines one and a half times as tall as single spacing, so a page holds two thirds of the single-spaced words. In 12 pt Times New Roman that is about 335 words per page, between 500 single-spaced and 250 double-spaced.
