Strikethrough Text Generator

Type your text and copy it with a line through every character. The strikethrough is made of Unicode characters, so it stays when you paste it into Instagram, Facebook, X, a username or any plain-text box.

How to use the strikethrough generator

  1. Type or paste your text in the box. Click Example to try it with “Strikethrough text”, or Open file to load a plain-text file.
  2. The result appears at once in three styles: Strikethrough, Underline and Slash-through.
  3. Click Copy next to the style you want and paste it into your post, bio, comment or message.
  4. To remove the lines from text you already have, choose Fancy → plain text under Direction and paste the styled text. Click Copy next to Plain text.

The links under the result (Bold text, Italic text, All fancy styles) open another generator with the same text, which is handy if you are not sure which effect you want.

How Unicode strikethrough works

Social apps do not let you format text in posts and bios, so a strikethrough generator cannot add real formatting. Instead it adds a combining character after every character. A combining character has no width of its own; the font draws it on top of the character before it. This tool uses three of them, all from the Combining Diacritical Marks block:

Style Character added Unicode name Example
Strikethrough U+0336 Combining Long Stroke Overlay H̶i̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶
Underline U+0332 Combining Low Line H̲i̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲r̲e̲
Slash-through U+0338 Combining Long Solidus Overlay H̸i̸ ̸t̸h̸e̸r̸e̸

So Hi becomes four code points: H, U+0336, i, U+0336. Because the stroke is a separate character, the letters underneath are still the ordinary letters H and i. That is why struck text can be turned back into plain text, and why it uses ordinary letters in any language: accented letters such as é and digits are struck through just like A to Z.

The long stroke (U+0336) gives a line that joins up between letters in most fonts, which is what people mean by “one line” strikethrough. Some other generators use the shorter U+0335 (Combining Short Stroke Overlay) instead.

The rules the tool follows

  • Every character gets a mark, including spaces. That keeps the line continuous across words: $20 off becomes $̶2̶0̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶. Tabs get one too.
  • Line breaks do not. Each line is struck separately, so a list stays a list. Windows line breaks (CR LF) are left as they are.
  • Characters are taken as you see them. An accented letter typed as a letter plus an accent, or an emoji with a skin tone such as 👍🏽, counts as one character and gets one mark, not two. On emoji the line is often hard to see.
  • Running the tool twice doubles the marks. Pasting text that is already struck through adds a second stroke to every character. Use Fancy → plain text first if you want to start again.
  • The reverse direction removes U+0305 and U+0332 to U+0338. That covers this tool’s three marks plus the overline, double underline, short stroke (U+0335), tilde overlay (U+0334) and short slash (U+0337) that other generators use: a̵b̵ comes back as ab. It also converts other fancy styles (bold, italic, circled and similar letters) back to plain letters, while ordinary characters such as ½ or fi stay as typed. Superscript digits count as a fancy style, so 5² becomes 52. For other hidden marks, the invisible character remover shows them so you can find them.
  • Plain → fancy is the only conversion. Nothing else in your text changes, and nothing is uploaded: the conversion runs in your browser.

A shopping list keeps its lines:

M̶i̶l̶k̶

B̶r̶e̶a̶d̶

You can combine the strikethrough with other Unicode styles. Make the text bold in the bold text generator first, then paste the result here: 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐞 becomes 𝐒̶𝐚̶𝐥̶𝐞̶. In Fancy → plain text, S̶a̶l̶e̶ ̶𝐧𝐨𝐰 comes back as Sale now.

When people use strikethrough text

  • Old and new prices. W̶a̶s̶ ̶$̶4̶9̶ now $29 in an Instagram caption or a marketplace listing. Strike only the old price, then type the new one normally.
  • Visible corrections. Showing what you changed your mind about, a joke correction, or an edit on a post that cannot be edited.
  • Done lists. Crossing off finished items in a bio, a pinned post or a plain-text note.
  • Underlined headings in places without formatting, such as a YouTube description or a plain-text email signature, using the Underline style.
  • Usernames and display names, where the slash or strike style makes a name stand out. Check the platform’s name rules first; some do not accept combining characters.

When to use real formatting instead

Unicode strikethrough is a visual trick. Screen readers may read every combining mark or skip the word, in-app search may not find it, and some apps remove the marks. Where the app has real formatting, use that:

Where How
Discord ~~text~~
Google Docs Alt+Shift+5 (Windows, ChromeOS), ⌘+Shift+X (Mac)
Excel for Windows Ctrl+5
Word and Outlook The strikethrough button in the font formatting options

Keep struck text short, and check the length before posting. X normalizes text to NFC before counting, but the stroke has no precomposed form, so every stroke counts: H̶i̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ uses 16 characters there. Paste the result into the character counter to see its X count next to the visible length. For other styles that paste anywhere, see the fancy text generator, and for when each style is a good idea on social media, read bold and italic text on social media.

Questions

How do I make strikethrough text on Instagram, Facebook or X?

These apps have no strikethrough button in posts, bios or comments. Type your text above, click Copy next to Strikethrough and paste it into the app. The line is part of the characters themselves, so it shows wherever the font can draw the combining mark.

How do I do strikethrough on Discord?

Discord has its own formatting, so you do not need a generator there. Wrap the text in two tildes on each side, ~~like this~~. The Unicode version from this page also works, but Discord's formatting is easier to edit and screen readers read it normally.

How do I strike through text in Excel, Google Docs or Outlook?

Use the program's own formatting rather than Unicode characters, so the text stays searchable and editable. In Excel for Windows press Ctrl+5. In Google Docs press Alt+Shift+5 on Windows and ChromeOS or ⌘+Shift+X on a Mac. In Word and Outlook, use the strikethrough button in the font formatting options.

Why does the strikethrough look broken or not show at all?

The line is a combining character drawn over the letter before it. Some fonts position it badly, so the line looks dashed or sits too high, and some apps strip combining marks or show them as boxes. Plain letters, digits and punctuation work best; on emoji the line is often hard to see.

Can I get the original text back?

Yes. Choose "Fancy → plain text" under Direction and paste the struck-through text. The tool removes the strikethrough, underline and slash marks, including the short stroke, tilde and double-underline marks other generators use, and gives you plain text you can edit.

Is strikethrough text accessible?

Not very. Screen readers may read each combining mark aloud or skip the word, and search engines and in-app search may not match it. Use it for short visual effects, such as a crossed-out old price, not for whole sentences that people need to read.

Does striking through text make it longer?

It depends on the app. Every character, including spaces, gets one extra combining character, so 'Hi there' becomes 16 code points. X counts each stroke, so it uses 16 of the 280 characters instead of 8. Counters that count visible characters, like our character counter, still show 8.
