How to use it

  1. Under Convert, pick Words → minutes to time a script, or Minutes → words to find out how much to write for a time slot.
  2. Type the number in Words or minutes. The field starts at 1,000 words.
  3. Choose a Speaking pace: Slow (120 wpm), Average speech (150 wpm), Reading aloud (183 wpm) or Fast (200 wpm). The large result uses this pace.
  4. Read the table under the result: it repeats the conversion at all four paces, so you can see the range without switching.

If you do not know your word count yet, paste the script into the word counter and bring the number back here.

The four speaking paces

Pace Words per minute Fits
Slow 120 Wedding toasts, eulogies, talks to a large room or through an interpreter, speakers who pause often
Average speech 150 Most presentations and conversational talks; the default
Reading aloud 183 Reading a written text straight through: audiobooks, voice-overs, reading a paper aloud
Fast 200 Brisk podcast or video narration, a rushed speaker

The 150 wpm default is the average rate of speech for English speakers in the United States given by the National Center for Voice and Speech. The 183 wpm figure is the average oral reading rate across 77 studies in Marc Brysbaert’s 2019 meta-analysis of reading rate. Reading prepared text runs faster than talking because you never stop to choose the next word.

To find your own pace, read one page of your script aloud with a timer and divide the words on the page by the minutes it took. If it lands far from these four paces, pick the closest one, or use Minutes → words with your real time to check the figure.

Words to minutes: common lengths

These times come straight from the calculator.

Words 120 wpm 150 wpm 183 wpm 200 wpm
100 50 sec 40 sec 33 sec 30 sec
250 2 min 5 sec 1 min 40 sec 1 min 22 sec 1 min 15 sec
500 4 min 10 sec 3 min 20 sec 2 min 44 sec 2 min 30 sec
750 6 min 15 sec 5 min 4 min 6 sec 3 min 45 sec
1,000 8 min 20 sec 6 min 40 sec 5 min 28 sec 5 min
1,500 12 min 30 sec 10 min 8 min 12 sec 7 min 30 sec
2,000 16 min 40 sec 13 min 20 sec 10 min 56 sec 10 min
3,000 25 min 20 min 16 min 24 sec 15 min
5,000 41 min 40 sec 33 min 20 sec 27 min 19 sec 25 min

The spread matters: the same 1,000-word speech runs anywhere from 5 to more than 8 minutes depending on delivery.

Minutes to words: how long is a 5-minute speech?

Switch to Minutes → words and the calculator multiplies the minutes by the pace and rounds to a whole word.

Time slot 120 wpm 150 wpm 183 wpm 200 wpm
1 minute 120 150 183 200
2 minutes 240 300 366 400
3 minutes 360 450 549 600
5 minutes 600 750 915 1,000
7 minutes 840 1,050 1,281 1,400
10 minutes 1,200 1,500 1,830 2,000
15 minutes 1,800 2,250 2,745 3,000
20 minutes 2,400 3,000 3,660 4,000

So a 5-minute speech written out is about 750 words, roughly 1½ pages single-spaced or 3 double-spaced. The 5-minute speech guide covers structure and pacing, and the words to pages converter gives the page count for your font and spacing.

How the time is calculated

  • The formula is words ÷ words per minute, converted to seconds and rounded to the nearest second. 1,000 words at 183 wpm is 327.9 seconds, shown as 5 min 28 sec.
  • Under a minute the result is in seconds only (40 sec). Any word count above zero shows at least 1 sec; zero shows 0 sec.
  • Whole minutes drop the seconds: 750 words at 150 wpm shows 5 min, not 5 min 0 sec.
  • An hour or longer is shown as hours and minutes, rounded to the nearest minute: 10,000 words at 150 wpm (66 min 40 sec) shows 1 h 7 min, and exactly 60 minutes (9,000 words at 150 wpm) shows 1 h.
  • Decimals work in both directions. In Minutes → words, 2.5 minutes at 150 wpm gives 375 words.
  • Negative or empty input counts as 0.
  • Nothing is added for pauses. The result is talking time only; applause, slide changes, demos and questions come on top.

Timing a real speech

A word-count estimate is a planning figure, not a stopwatch. A few habits make it more useful:

  1. Write to the slot, then cut. For a 10-minute slot at 150 wpm, aim for about 1,500 words, and a little under if you expect laughter or want time for questions.
  2. Budget the extras separately. A video clip, a live demo or a show of hands takes real time that no word count reflects. Subtract it from the slot before converting minutes to words.
  3. Rehearse once with a timer. Your first read-through shows whether you are a 130 or a 170 wpm speaker; switch the pace to match and recheck the rest of the script.
  4. Shorten long sentences. Sentences that are easy to read can be hard to say in one breath. The sentence counter lists the longest ones, and the readability checker flags dense passages.
  5. Use reading time for text people read silently. Silent reading is much faster than speech; for blog posts and emails, use the reading time calculator instead.

Questions

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

About 750 words at an average pace of 150 words per minute. A slow, deliberate speaker (120 wpm) needs about 600 words, and someone reading a script aloud at 183 wpm gets through about 915. See the 5-minute speech guide for planning tips.

How long does it take to say 1,000 words?

6 min 40 sec at 150 words per minute, 5 min 28 sec at 183 wpm, 8 min 20 sec at a slow 120 wpm and 5 min at a fast 200 wpm.

What is a normal speaking rate?

The National Center for Voice and Speech puts the average rate for English speakers in the United States at about 150 words per minute. Reading a text aloud averages 183 wpm in Brysbaert's 2019 review of 77 studies. Presenters who pause for slides and audiences usually land below 150.

Does the calculator count the words in my speech?

No, it converts a number you type. Paste your script into the word counter first, then enter the word count here. The word counter also shows a speaking time, at 183 wpm.

Can I enter part of a minute?

Yes. In Minutes → words mode, type a decimal such as 2.5 for two and a half minutes; at 150 wpm that gives 375 words.

Does it work for Chinese or other languages?

The paces are averages for English words. Languages such as Chinese and Japanese are not written with spaces between words and pack different amounts of meaning into a word or character, so a word count from another language does not convert reliably. Time a rehearsal instead.

How many pages is a 5-minute speech?

About 750 words is roughly 1½ pages single-spaced or 3 pages double-spaced in a 12-point font. Font size and spacing change this a lot; the words to pages converter works it out for your settings.
