How to reverse text
- Type or paste your text into Your text, or press Example to try the sample sentence. Open file reads a plain-text file such as .txt or .csv.
- Under Reverse, choose The whole text, Each line or Letters in each word. The result updates as you type or change the option.
- Press Copy to put the result on your clipboard, or Download .txt to save it.
- To keep working on the result, press Use as input (Undo puts your earlier text back), or open it in the reverse words or upside-down text tool from the links under the result.
The three Reverse options
With one line of text, The whole text and Each line give the same result. The difference shows up with several lines. Here is the same three-line note in each mode:
Dear Sam,
See you at 9:30.
Alex
| Reverse | What changes | Result |
|---|---|---|
| The whole text | Every character, including line breaks, from last to first. The last line comes first. | xelA / .03:9 ta uoy eeS / ,maS raeD |
| Each line | Each line is reversed on its own; the lines stay in their order. | ,maS raeD / .03:9 ta uoy eeS / xelA |
| Letters in each word | Each word is reversed; words, spaces and lines stay where they are. | raeD ,maS / eeS uoy ta .03:9 / xelA |
(The slashes mark line breaks.) If you want the words or lines themselves in reverse order but still readable, this is the wrong tool: the reverse words tool gives Sam, Dear / 9:30. at you See / Alex, and sort lines with Reverse current order gives Alex / See you at 9:30. / Dear Sam,.
Emoji, flags and accented letters stay intact
Many reverse text tools flip the raw code units of the text. That breaks anything built from more than one code point: a thumbs-up with a skin tone splits into a plain thumbs-up and a loose color swatch, and a flag, which is two regional-indicator letters, has its letters swapped into a different or invalid flag.
This tool reverses by grapheme clusters, the user-perceived characters defined in Unicode’s text segmentation standard (UAX #29), using the browser’s built-in segmenter. A character and the marks attached to it move as one unit:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
café 🇯🇵 👍🏽 |
👍🏽 🇯🇵 éfac |
👨👩👧 🇺🇸 🇫🇷 |
🇫🇷 🇺🇸 👨👩👧 |
Ça va (Ç typed as C plus a cedilla mark) |
av aÇ |
नमस्ते |
स्तेमन |
The same rule keeps Hindi and other scripts with combining vowel signs readable as syllables rather than scattering the marks. Very old browsers without the segmenter fall back to reversing code points, which keeps simple emoji whole but can split skin tones, flags and accent marks.
Spaces, punctuation and line breaks
- Punctuation moves with the text. In every mode a comma or period is just another character, so
world!becomes!dlrow. In Letters in each word, a “word” is anything between spaces, so punctuation attached to a word is reversed with it:don't stop-me now.becomest'nod em-pots .won. - Spaces and tabs are kept exactly. Double spaces and tabs stay as they are; in The whole text they simply move to the mirrored position, so
a b+ tab +cbecomesc+ tab +b a. - Empty lines are kept in all modes, and a trailing line break in The whole text ends up at the start of the result.
- Line endings. Each line writes the result with plain line feeds, so Windows line endings (CR LF) become LF. The other two modes keep CR LF pairs together.
- Numbers and dates are reversed digit by digit:
2026-10-21becomes12-01-6202.
Backwards text, palindromes and puzzles
Reversing is its own undo. Paste backwards text, reverse it again with the same option, and you get the original. That makes the tool a backwards text decoder as well as a generator.
It is also a quick palindrome check. A word that reads the same both ways, such as racecar, comes out unchanged. Phrases usually need spaces, punctuation and capitals ignored: Never odd or even becomes neve ro ddo reveN, which matches once you compare letters only. Some words turn into other words: stressed becomes desserts.
When people use reverse text
- Social posts and usernames. Backwards captions, bios and gamer tags are a common joke or hidden message. The result is plain text, so it pastes anywhere text is allowed.
- Puzzles, escape rooms and classroom activities. Writing clues backwards is a simple code that players can solve by hand or with a mirror. For a code that cannot be read by reversing, use the Caesar cipher.
- Testing software. Developers reverse strings to check that their own code handles emoji, combining accents and line endings, and the results above show what a correct grapheme-based reversal looks like.
- Design and print. Text that will be read through glass or in a mirror, such as a window decal printed on the inside, needs its order reversed. Order alone is not enough there: each letter must also be mirrored, which is a font or graphics job rather than a text one.
- Styling. Combine it with the fancy text generator to get reversed text in bold, script or other Unicode styles.
Questions
How do I read or decode backwards text?
Paste the backwards text into the box and keep The whole text selected. Reversing a reversed text gives the original back, so "!dlrow ,olleH" becomes "Hello, world!". If only the letters of each word were reversed, choose Letters in each word instead.
Is reverse text the same as mirror text?
No. This tool changes the order of the characters, but each letter still looks the same. Mirror writing also flips every letter, and plain text has no mirrored copy of most letters. For a flipped look, the upside-down text generator swaps letters for upside-down look-alikes and reverses them, so "Hello" becomes "ollǝH".
Can I copy and paste the reversed text anywhere?
Yes. The result is ordinary text made of the same characters you typed, only in a different order, so it pastes into social posts, chats, documents and code. Press Copy or Download .txt under the result.
Why don't emoji and flags break when I reverse text?
The tool reverses whole characters as you see them, not the separate code points inside them. A skin-tone emoji, a flag such as 🇯🇵, a family emoji or an é typed as e plus an accent mark is moved as one unit, so it comes out unchanged.
How do I reverse the order of words instead of letters?
Use the reverse words tool. It turns "See you at 9:30." into "9:30. at you See", with every word still readable.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The reversing runs in your browser. The text is kept only in this browser tab so it is still there if you open another tool, and it disappears when you close the tab.
